английский текст ‘It is time for more feminine heroes.’
The fifth season of Castle will be ‘naughty’, says Stana Katic. The actress, who portrays the tough detective Beckett in the series, is visibly excited about this. She loves sparkling characters and an adventurous life. ‘Too bad I’m less and less allowed to do stunts myself.’
People who love the American cop-show Castle had to wait 4 seasons for this, but “it” has finally happened. In the final episode of season 4, the tough NYPD-detective Kate Beckett finally ended up in bed with thriller author Richard Castle. No minuscule result after all the diversions of attraction and repel that was played out by the scriptwriters – and not to forget the actors, Stana Katic and Nathan Fillion. The next step became gradually inescapable, actress Stana Katic explains: ‘We couldn’t stretch the tension any longer. It was time for a reward. For the viewers, and of course for Beckett and Castle as well, after everything they’ve been through together.’ According to Katic the new developments make the show even more exciting. ‘A love-relationship brings along sensuality and people are more likely to show their vulnerability. Besides, personal contradictions are more difficult to avoid. Castle’s charm is essential, but so is Beckett’s strength (the article calls her a “koele krachtpatser”, which literally translates into “cool muscleman/powerhouse and I was like….uhm, yeah…no) . They both have their own views on reality so you can count on it they’ll encounter (clash?) each other on that front. Lovers bantering is the best kind of foreplay anyway.’
Some fans thought the fourth season was a bit on the grim side. Katic has good news for them: ‘This new season is naughty. This doesn’t mean it’s going to be all pleasant. The first episode deals with Beckett’s search to find her mother’s killer. At the end of the episode (article says season, but then they’d know more than any of us do) there’s even some sort of closure. You can compare it to Batman. He has known for a long time that The Joker represents evil, but he continues to find himself in situations where he has to fight him. You can safely say that Beckett is the female Batman.’ This brings us to a sensitive subject. All those male film- and television heroes, Katic has had enough of it. ‘I’m happy I was allowed to portray Cleopatra on stage two years ago. She was a brilliant, charismatic woman. And not at all beautiful by the way, according to official sources. Plenty of movies have been made about Cleopatra, I know, but I wish we’d see more imposing feminine characters and heroes. Take someone like Michael Corleone in The Godfather for example. A prodigious character, but in our culture someone like that is guaranteed to be portrayed by a man, even though I’ve never pictured myself in any other kind of role.
Karate-girl
Katic, Canadian born and the oldest daughter of East-European immigrants, knew early on she wanted to be an actress. She was also a vivacious child. ‘Every holiday was all about the plays me and my four younger brothers and my younger sister would perform on the porch. I woke them up at 6.30am and then we’d all dress up to rehearse. Sometimes someone wasn’t happy with their part in the play and it would all fall apart. But I always happily started over. Logically, because nothing is more fun than to play. ‘ Add the outspoken sporting talent – she loves karate, horseback riding and archery – and you’ll understand that Katic never lets herself fall into the part of bimbo. In the television show 24 she played a corrupt informant with connections to terrorists, after that she played a cold killer-machine in the thriller Stiletto and a dauntless detective in The Spirit. Her performance as Bond-girl in Quantum of Solace leaves her with mixed memories: ‘Daniel Craig was very witty and I even became friends with director Marc Foster, but apart from that it was unfortunate (as in she wasn’t that content with it, the Dutch word has no English translation). They didn’t want me as a leading lady and I didn’t want to get killed, while everybody else dies in that bloody movie.’
Environmentally conscious
Fortunately Katic did land the role of an important female character in the yet to be released Jack Kerouac-adaptation Big Sur. And she’s long from done with her portrayal of Kate Beckett. ‘I’m really enjoying playing a character that, over the years, gains more layers and dimensions’, she says. ‘However, it’s too bad I’m less and less allowed to do the stunts myself. It’s just no longer possible insurance wise. Unfortunately, that’s the downside of gaining fame.’
Attention is another by-product, Katic realizes. Sometimes she consciously uses that fame, like for the promotion of her Alternative Travel Project – ‘give up your car for 7 days’ – for which she walks, bikes and uses public transport for a few weeks to get to the set in Los Angeles. This to make the people living in California more conscious of the environment. ‘I train my body and meet a lot of nice people on the way’, she shares enthusiastically. She also can’t stop talking about her recent trip to Mongolia, where she explored the Gobi desert from the back of a camel. But don’t ask her about her adventures in the field of love. ‘Romance isn’t easy for some celebrities’, she vaguely mentions. ‘If the media gets wind of you dating Robert Pattinson, you no longer have a life.’ Good thing she isn’t a profligate. ‘I find it beautiful to really commit to someone, long-term.’
